How to handle the invisible pressure of studying

There are other tasks and deadlines besides those related to your subjects. By creating an overview and acting proactively, you can eliminate some of the stress that can accompany life in higher education.

When you start higher education, you encounter a range of tasks that you do not come across in high school. In addition to the academic content of your studies, you are now also responsible for everything around it.

You have two tasks during your studies

Naturally, you have applied to the program to get an education and become more knowledgeable about what interests you. But besides studying, you are also responsible for all the administrative tasks around your education.

Choosing subjects, deadlines for applying for electives, exam dates, and registration and deregistration of both subjects and exams are now your own responsibility. You have to apply, register, and deregister—often in several different systems depending on your purpose.

In reality, there are two different tasks in studying. One is to read and become knowledgeable about your subject, but there is also everything else. Planning, registering, and prioritizing your time are not part of the core task, but they are important for studying with calm and ease.

Give it time and get it done

By writing all tasks, deadlines, and registrations in a calendar, you make the diffuse task more manageable. In the same calendar, you can write down exams and when you want to read what to make the work towards deadlines more structured.

The danger of postponing administrative tasks again and again is that deadlines for electives or deregistration of a subject you do not want to follow may be missed, and then you are in trouble.

It can seem overwhelming to have to familiarize yourself with two different IT systems, find the right form, or submit pre-approvals to the study board. You can help yourself and your fellow students by asking teachers, tutors, older students, and administrative staff as much as you can

Create a culture where people dare to ask

For some, it is very daunting to ask questions that may seem elementary. It can also feel as if everyone else has a complete grasp of all deadlines and rules – but that is not always the case.

Talk to others in your studies, ask if they are on top of these things, ask questions, and keep asking until you understand what you need to do. Those who ask for help and are good at talking to others also have better chances of completing their studies.

Maybe it takes a few hours to figure out where to do what – and when you need to have it done by. But the time is well spent compared to worrying about diffuse tasks you haven’t familiarized yourself with.
